Topic: Suggestion on renaming "art gallery"

I know I am stupid, maybe I'm the only one that sees this.

When I see "Art Gallery", I think of art. I see pictures, wallpaper, designs, such things like that, but not music.
I see there is music in the art gallery, and occasionally I tend to forget that's where to find music topics.

Would "media gallery" be better or not?

I'm only suggesting. no complaints. If you want it the same, that's fine, I'll just remember that's where the art and music is.

Well, I think it's just a matter of how are you acustomed to say it.

Music is art, although not visual art, but auditive art.
It's not less or more art than any other arts (including also poetry, etc).

But I understand what you mean, and the common conception (or misconception?) of saying simply and colloquialy 'art' specifically to visual artistic stuff.

So you have a point there. Media gallery is not a bad name.

I used to joke that of the three major types of art (Music, writing, and visual art) the only one I couldn't do was "art".

More seriously, I think the word "media" has its own problems.

I think when they started .com, they were thinking of art as in... um, pictures. But when people started doing music, it naturally went into the gallery.  And music certainly can be called art, except when I make it, of course.

In terms of the definition of the word, I think "art" is more broad and inclusive than many of the possible alternatives, including "media," so I think it's okay as is.

That and the fact that changing the name would probably throw me for a loop for days on end, regardless of whether or not I knew it was coming.

And to be fair, the music hasn't ALWAYS ended up in the art gallery. It's kind of ended up all over the place. Another common spot is the Mess Hall. Art Gallery is just one of the more logical places to stick it, though, and seeing there's been a rise of musical endeavors as of late (more than in the past), it seems like there's an abundance of them.

thanks for the replies. media sounds nice, but maybe it does sound more music than art, then that wouldn't work.

Well, to me media has just the opposite problem, sounds less like picture type art.  Again, the definition of media is not quite what I really think of as being media. I guess we could just drop art and call it The Gallery. But it has always been what it is and I really don't see a need to change.

How about "Art Media" or "Media Art" or "Media and Art" ... or "Art and Media" ?

Well if everybody thinks it needs to be changed, that might work.  But do we really need to change it?

I (personally) am not worried about it and think the term "Gallery" suitable applies to "whatever our members wish to show ... and the forum admins approve of." (I threw in that disclaimer)
