I went to descentbb.net today and it was done, did it go away?
-
It's been down since last night.
-
.net or .com? When accessing http://www.descentbb.net i get a server not found. but http://www.descentbb.com i get a site.
edit: okay, i guess there are both. here's some topic about the site being down

Dbb.com is a different forum entirely. It confused me at first too (I'm glad when I signed up for one, I signed up for .net though. .net is said to be a much nicer place).
-
so .com is more aggressive? I heard that back in the PD.com days. Something about them not being so friendly to the new people.
-
It's just a different culture.
I'd make an analogy something like, ".com is a biker bar, .net is a corner diner".
-
nice analogy.
-
Huh, I don't visit either forum personally, but Techpro does, and I've read over his shoulder some of the posts. They both seemed rough and tough to me. Not at all like the family-friendliness of PD.
Maybe that's just a first impression, though.
-
You're pretty right, it was not just a first impression.
I do really like some ppl at the DBB .net place, but I actually stopped visiting it some time ago 'cause it was full of fights and arguing specially on the E&C section (nothing even related to Descent at all, but still the most active part of the forum).
But even with that, the .com is even more harsh and rude, IMHO.
-
It is pretty gritty. And Foil's analogy is spot on.
-
Yep. I'm still glad I came to the site that has a greater tolerance for new members when I first came into the community :P. I'm lucky because when I signed up I had thought that they were both the same site (I hadn't noticed the slight differences in forum names, and everything else looked the same).
Oh btw it's back up now. And this new post was in the announcements section:
Downtime:
Sorry all and Happy New Year!
This downtime was related to some DNS issue, not sure what I did but I put a temporary patch inline until I can figure out what happened.

So where are we? The parents' corner of Chuck E. Cheese's?
-
I had thought that they were both the same site (I hadn't noticed the slight differences in forum names, and everything else looked the same).
I just checked and have to ask, why is there a descentbb.net and a descentbb.com if they are basically identical? I am too assume some of the same people post at both of those sites too.
talk about confusing.
"Now did I reply to that music talk in .com or .net?"

Without going into too much detail, DBB.com was created around 2005 by a set of users who were unhappy with what they felt were overly-restrictive rules at DBB.net. They created DBB.com specifically to be less restrictive about language, lewdness, etc.
Thus, while many people frequent both boards, the culture at .com is considerably more 'adult'.
The fact that they have the same look has inspired some heated exchanges between admins over the years, but things are pretty calm now. Some people prefer one board over the other, some just have an account in both.

DBB.com is a biker bar.
DBB.net is a corner diner.
PD.net... perhaps a high school (or college) cafeteria.
It's not a perfect analogy. :)

this is probably worse, PD.net a library?
okay, that's bad. I'm just trying to think of a place that kids and adults go to. overall, no bad language, no fights. no yelling. most are pretty well mannered here.
-
PD.net is like my home town in attitude, mostly, but if I were to tell you where it was, I'd be telling you where I live. :P

I GOT IT!!!
The Christian Bookstore...
-
Well, it's not a christian bookstore, I'm not christian. How about a family restaurant or pub, to keep it inline with the Dbb analogy?
-

I think that's a good one. There's a "Traditional Irish Pub" (that used to be part of its name :P) down the street from where I live that has a very nice atmosphere (and good food too :D).
Though this talk of analogies seems a little trivial. But what the heck, it's something to talk about.

That works.
In any case, I think every one of the forums has it's place in the community. B)
-
Apparantly there are tons of religions lying around here. It's awesome.
-
That's kind of common I imagine. even left wingers and right wingers, or I suppose, middle of the road.
I consider myself a Christian, but spiritually, not really religiously.
-
How about, Planet Descent is the Disneyland Biker Bar?
-
...Maybe just Disneyland in general... ::)
-
don't care for either, but sort of side with scyphi's suggestion. bikers, cool! bar, eh, don't drink, don't care for it.
disneyland, eh, ok.
but a disneyland biker bar?
that's like trying to look cool with a spongebob tatoo, or a hat. :)
suggestion: "we are your neighbors down the street."
that might actually scare people away. bad idea :)
-

That thar's funny! ;)

Ok, ok... Disneyland Biker Coffee Shop :-\
