Maybe you've heard of Diaspora (http://www.joindiaspora.com/), which aims to be an alternative to Facebook. The main point being, you remain in control of your data. It's open source, runs on Ruby. Meaning you have to have a server with Ruby installed to run it. Other than that they are not very specific about how it is better privacy-wise than Facebook.
The only true way to privacy on the internet is... if you don't want to share something, don't put it on the internet.

What makes Diaspora "safer" than Facebook is the fact that you are your own page's server, if i understand correctly. So, when you want to take down your information, you know it's gone, where as when you discontinue a facebook account, the information is still stored somewhere.
