Desktops 2012
« on: December 31, 2011, 11:49:50 PM »
Happy New Year! Post yer desktops for 2012!

************

In my Mario Maps monthly wallpapers, Luigi leaves behind Mario and returns to World 1, Cold Frontier. I'm going to post 2011's Cold Frontier map so you can compare it to the new 2012 map.

Improvements:
- Warp pipe architecture more "realistic" and not SMB3 map-like anymore.
- Character avatar downsized.
- Inventory better organized.
- File name removed from inventory box.
- Improved Koopa Kid avatars.
- Better icon integration into maps.

Coming Soon:
- Updated character and enemy avatars... upgrading from SMB3 avatars to Mario & Luigi: Super Star Saga avatars. (SMB3 map layout will remain the same.)

Fusion is one of the best Metroid games imo, so there's her fusion suit.

And... continuing on with the Desktops of 2012 ...

Here's what I put up on my work Win7 system.  I'm kind of liking it.  Easy on the eyes.

Yes, that is the Trashcan that's sitting in the Taskbar.

I just got a hilariously evil idea. Post a desktop background that's super awesome, and is animated so it has a bug crawling randomly across it periodically. But don't tell the downloaders that ;)

Not all that hard (but I ain't gonna do it), especially thanks to what used to be called "Active Desktop" in the Windows 95 days.  You simply put active web content on your desktop and ... presto! -- However, it's pretty well avoided these days due to overhead and the fact that the desktop would be acting as a constant (and active) web browser.  Not exactly a very secure approach.

Another way (not so easy, but doable) is a custom desktop widget that moves around the screen instead of being locked to the "sidebar" (as it's called in Windows Vista).   The weather and time widget you see in my desktop screenshots is a desktop widget, but it isn't programmed to move around on the screen.

As I recall, it isn't possible to activate Active Desktop anymore, and while I'm pretty sure that .gifs won't animate if put on the desktop, it doesn't matter because Windows 7 decides that it has to convert every image you set as your background to .jpg (I don't know why they would ever do this, but it's pretty easy to work around if you know your registry-fu. Earlier versions, such as Windows XP, would keep the native format if it could, and convert it (to .BMP) if it couldn't support it (ie: .PNG). I'm surprised that Windows 7 still doesn't have native support for .png backgrounds, heh)

I think have seen some people work around the lack of animated desktops, however, by telling Windows to pull the backgrounds in a folder with all the individual frames of animation, and they'd set the computer to switch backgrounds rapidly. This sounds extremely space-inefficient on longer animations, though.
