The fun was good.
« on: October 13, 2011, 07:35:26 PM »
My job takes place on the campus of a University that (currently) serves about 15,000 students.  The campus is laid out to have nearly all of the education facilities within reasonable walking distance and is arranged to favor walking more than driving and thus is considered a "walking" campus.  There are sidewalks everywhere and often take graceful turns amidst direct courses from building to building in a web of pathways with grass, trees, and decorative flower beds wherever it aids the cosmetic appearance of the grounds and buildings.  In my opinion, it's a very beautiful campus, even though there is currently some construction and re-vamping of the grounds in progress due to recent new buildings and expansion.

Ah, if I had the time (and patience) to do it, I'd be kind of interested in mimicking the campus grounds and buildings in a Descent level, just to have the fun of racing around in it.  Kind of like merging the feel of a level with multiple buildings with the feel of the "Batteries Included" level.  With plenty of room to race around near ground level between buildings (or around them) along with romping around in and out of buildings, I think it'd be a lot of fun.

I was thinking about just that kind of thing today while I walked down gentle slopes arching past greenery and past buildings ... and nearly forgot where I was headed.

Then the cell phone rang.  Someone was having a problem with their printer.  Fun time over.

Actually someone was arrested for making a Counter Strike level reflecting their high school.

Oh now that's an awesome idea. My old high school would be perfect! Three levels in a square figure 8 pattern, two atriums (in the center of those figure 8's, a center stairs plus four stairs with one in each corner of the building, a central two-story library on top of the cafeteria, halls within halls where the classrooms are, two gyms plus a mini practice gym about half the size of a basketball court, workout room, two locker rooms, large auditorium, an actual box office for our plays, etc. It would be perfect! After all, it WAS originally designed to be a prison. There are NO windows in the classrooms.

I can see how one would go about this level now. I have an excellent memory with numbers, and I can PROBABLY recall all the classrooms I've ever had a class in. The level would start at the main entrance of course, and with "other players" beginning at the bus stop entrances and 4 stairway entrances. The rooms I had classes in would be locked and have control panels unlocking the doors to the other classrooms I've had, while the classrooms I've never had classes in would remain unlocked and I would put traps like Class 1 Drillers or other surprise robots in them.

Robot matcens will be the lockers (on all three levels) and at busy hallway intersections and triggered with either control panels, movements, or access keys. The food line would be the energy center. The cafeteria would be a nice are for a dogfight. Maybe a couple of boss battles at the gymnasiums. A reactor could be at the principal's office. The exit could be on the third floor. I remember, there's this "utility room" between rooms 344 and 345 that says "roof access" and has a ladder and you could always see sunlight shining into that room. That would be the PERFECT exit. Guidebot could be at the clinic.

I used to make levels back when DMB was installed on my Windows 98 computer. I don't anymore though. Now I'm just a Descent music junkie. I wanna make this!!! But that would be a HUUUGE project. I still gotta finish my Mario Maps (the ones you've seen on the Desktops 2011 thread), but I'm currently working on this Descent RAVE music project. After those two projects, I gotta make my highway decals, which is a 1cm x 1cm decal on my back window of every highway my car has been on, and I have a LOT to add since my Florida trip this summer, then I gotta make album covers of every playlist I've made this year. THEN I will be free! And people wonder why I took the next two semesters off from school. I'm probably not going back.
I like to think I have a Descent taste of music.

I have a whole mess of level ideas I would love to turn into a reality, but can't ever make the time to do it, too busy with other things that in the long run, I'm probably better off focusing my time on anyway. If only it didn't take so much time and effort to piece these levels together...  >:(

Curiouser and curiouser.
Now I feel even curiouser.

Are you a computer engineer of some kind?  From your name and the last part of your post I would think you did more generic tech support, but there's plenty of that to go around and you made it sound like your field was rarer and in much more demand.  My guess is either some sort of engineer, or a specialist in one area of tech support (the Panda to the Microsoft Help Center's Grizzly, if you know what I mean... though I guess that's a bad analogy because grizzlies don't eat bamboo -- Or Is It?.)  And yeah, I think I completely lost any sense of topic with that analogy.

Of course, I'd be equally happy if you didn't answer.  I love trying to figure out these thought-puzzles and riddles by myself, too.

Anyway, back to testing.
If testing were the topic of this thread.

Good guessing.  I'm a computer tech (Windows of all versions, Macs of all versions, occasional Linux) at that University and in addition to computers I'm the resident specialist on printers and multi-function printers ('modern' copiers),  and yes, that field (computer tech + printer specialty) is definitely a bit more rare which keeps me in demand.

[resuming the topic...]

Work full-time plus raising four children really puts a dent in the chance to spend time making levels.  I've probably got at least three Descent 2 levels part way created but never finished, plus one I finished but now want to radically change it.  Making anything for Descent 3 ... right now looks like it would take a lot more time to do, and I just don't have that time.   :'(

But I can imagine!  ;D

The way things are going I was expecting to be entirely wrong.  Maybe this bodes well for yesterday's [suspicious]microbiology exam[/suspicious].
