Are you working in Photoshop?
You can create a new layer from background if you right click on it in the layers window and then delete that original background layer and that gives you a transparent 'surround'.
You just save it as a PNG after that.
It's one of those things that you wouldn't guess. You'd have to know it was there or stumble upon it. That's like all of photoshop.
