Descent 1 and Descent 2 Linux - questions
« on: December 16, 2010, 02:23:54 PM »
I am thinking about getting back in the mines, D1 and D2 style! Questions though, I know there's some software someone or some people did like rebirth I think, and D2x-xl, etc..
I have Mandriva Linux right now. What is the best way to get this going? Is this D1 and/or D2 free on the net now, or not? I don't know if I heard right on that. obviously, I want no illegal copies. If I have to buy them, that's fine.
If you can help me, I'd appreciate that.

Get D1 and D2 at Good Old Games (gog.com), then follow the instructions at the Rebirth and XL sites.

I think I have to wait until my bank is open. It may be blocking oversea transactions. I dont know how that could be. Mandriva is overseas and I was able to pay for stuff at their site.
I'll let them know. thanks!

You need the original game data for both D2X-XL and Rebirth. D2X-XL has detailled installation instructions for Linux. You will have to build the game from source code, but that boils down to a few commands (making configure executable, executing a shell script, configure, and make).

I have a feeling I am going to run into something that I don't know much about. I don't know much about this source code, building, etc. I guess with instructions, I could.

I really have no idea what to do with rebirth right now. I'm getting an idea, but I was never too good in thise source code sort of thing, and compiling  or whatever

I think there was something that comes with the software when you download it. To some, source, compile, tar bz, or whatever, is just a language one understands. To someone like me, I am not sure what it means. I can try to figure it out.
