Topic: Going to see Queen Elizabeth II today

Yes, that's right, The Queen is in town today.  Xaihyv and I are going to see her at 6:00 when she donates the cornerstone for the Canadian Museum of Human Rights (apparently this stone was present at the signing of the Magna Carta).

The Queen is one of the few political (and religious) leaders who this creature actually admires (the others are Nelson Mandella and Barack Obama).

Obama was a mistake. He has done things close to dictatatorship. The healthcare plan? More than half the US didn't want it, but now we are stuck with it. He won the Nobel Peace Prize by opening up a Craker Jack box. He has made countless speeches and talke a lot but says little. I'd say that the majority of the Americans dislike him. But then again nobody else would have been a good choice either.

Now Mandella is a legend. That's a great person.


My opinions aside, that's awesome being able to see your nation's leader in person. I haven't seen any of ours yet.

Personally, I think Obama is a good guy in his own right, just maybe not so much as president (His term isn't up yet, so I'm waiting to see how things go from here).

But part of the blame can also go to other departments in the government...

Yeah, I've pretty much lost hope for American politics, myself. Seems like no matter what we the citizens do, it's a lose-lose scenario. Nobody you can vote for really has that good of a chance of setting things straight. No wonder most people don't vote. There's little point.

But anyway, about Queen Elizabeth, I admittedly don't know much about her, but what I have heard has all been fairly good things. Cool that you get a chance to see her in person, Alter-Fox.

I have the experience enough to know that politics is a subject best not discussed.

Matt, perhaps you meant something like "this is not a good place to do it", but it is very important to discuss politics.

Spouting useless rhetoric and empty criticism, however, is not discussion. What things has Obama done that are close to dictatorship? Do you even know what Dictatorship means? I am by no means an Obama supporter, but repeating the same empty rhetoric, personal insults and unsupported statistics does nothing for either side.

It seems only everyone outside the US supports Obama.

Just like everyone outside Canada seems to say Stephen Harper is a swell guy (but Canadians know he isn't).

Agreed. That's why I enver signed up for the DBB in the first place, ebcause, tbh, most of what goes on on DBB is rather distasteful.

In today's society, mere mention of "Obama" will change any discussion into politics, thanks to the heavy dissupport. But that's another topic, for another thread.

But seriously, A fancy stone from the Magna Carta signing is an interesting treasure. I love it when old stuff lasts forever.

It's becoming the cornerstone for the Canadian Museum for Human Rights here in Winnipeg.

I'm looking forward to seeing the museum when it's finished actually.  I love museums.

Very cool to see the Queen! I myself would be interested in that, even if I am from Alabama. 

As far as politics goes, I see no problem discussing it on forums, as long as no one gets into a fight (which, unfortunately, tends to happen on forums). I am not an Obama supporter in the least - the Chicago-style machine politics behind the adoption of the healthcare bill is scary, to say the least. As a nurse, my profession is going to explode into hundreds of new opportunities - which is good for me and bad for everyone else. Good, knowledgeable physicians will be cut in favor of bringing in cheaper practitioners, which will ultimately lead to a massive increase in misdiagnosis, mistreatment, and malpractice. Plus, the healthcare bill establishes a single-payer insurance plan - which ultimately means that taxes will be hiked up to an unbelieveable high, with some estimates ranging from 50-65% of income. Ultimately, treatment will suffer as well, since it will be mostly on a first-come-first-serve basis. Got stage 4 bone cancer? Sorry, bro - there's a homeless guy here acting like he's in pain so he can get morphine ahead of you. You'll have to wait. 

Those are my thoughts. Perhaps Obama has his heart in the right place - but ultimately, when government bereaucracy runs a program that should be run by doctors and nurses, the result will inevitably be catastrophic.
