Descent 2 control issue

Recently, I tried to play descent 2, but ran into some control problems. First I tried the mouse, but it wasn't nearly as sensitive as I would like it to be. In the past I have played d2 alot on that same comp without problems...
For reference I tried descent 1 on a different computer, control was much better.
I turned mouse/joystick sensitivity within the game to max.
I also tried a Microsoft sidewinder joystick I have. I have never played descent with it before. Say I try to turn left: I turn the stick to the left and hold it. As long as I am moving the stick, the ship turns. When the joystick is all the way to the side, the ship stops.
I am using plain Microsoft Sidewinder joystick.
Any ideas?
