Acceleration is nigh-instant in D3 and turning is fairly constant without any possible loss of control. Because of this, racing just simply wouldn't work. However, mod the ships to accelerate to top speed and throw in a little inertia, and it could be an absolutely amazing mod.

... Have you actually played the mod WillyP? That's exactly what it does.

Did you mean me?
If so, I have not played the mod as of yet. I was just posting a comment based purely on the topic of physics... I had gathered from Scyphi's posts that standard D3 physics still applied. But now you have my curiosity piqued.

Mine as well. From what I remember toying around with the mod, it used the usual D3 physics as well. You saying that this is not so? (that easily could be the case. Remember, I only got to toy with it in passing, never really had the chance to use it to it's full potential I don't think.)

We tried the mod a few days ago. Even the D3 version from Dateiliste can't run it with the OG3 mod.
It crashes because the amount of additional custom objects exceeds 10 or 12.
I've updated a Descent 3 installation to 1.5 and tried it briefly. That seems to work, but I didn't test it properly.
I think what we did a couple of years ago was just play the level without the mod itself.
Anyway, it looks like there's at least one reason to work on a D3 version that contains both, version 1.4 and version 1.5 switchable.

Great! That would be really helpful indeed.

I dunno, doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of having a v1.5 and a v1.4?
Maybe it should be made into a v1.4-and-a-half.

I have a version of OG3 laying around somewhere that was always stable(ish) when playing. Never had any crashing problems to be honest... ?

After installing it into a v1.5 copy of D3, it's pretty stable as long as you're not trying to run a dedi server.
I'm not sure where you guys got that it uses the "usual" D3 physics, because it doesn't. The ships handle more like real spacecraft. They take a long time to accelerate and decelerate, and they slide a LOT while turning. Not good for fighting like someone suggested (in FiringRange?) (trust me I tried what was suggested, got totally pwned because I could barely handle my ship), but as far as I can tell would make for great fun racing.

I think, if you manage to kill someone, it should play the "Contender Eliminated" line from WipEout Pure. Second most awesome game quote ever imo (the most awesome is Shadow saying "Hmph" in Sonic Heroes).
I want to try this if I can ever find a way to make a second install and upgrade it to 1.5
