I say no, Portal is not part of Half Life. Black Mesa is there as a referance.
There's more of a connection than that.  Anyone who's played Half-Life 2: Episode 2 should catch a fairly prominent Portal cameo.

That's right, I read somewhere that Half-Life 2 made reference to Aperture Science, but it didn't sound like a big role to me.  :-\

Didn't even notice it. If it is smaller than Portal's referance, then they are definately not truely part of eachother.

Me too, it sounds like it's going to be bigger and better than the original. :D

That's right, I read somewhere that Half-Life 2 made reference to Aperture Science, but it didn't sound like a big role to me.  :-\
Near the end of HL2: Episode 2, the main characters watch a transmission from Judith Mossman taking about a discovery she made somewhere up north.  The view then shifts to the image of a ship called the Borealis, which stuns all of the characters.  As detailed in some of the semi-hidden Portal web content, that ship originally belonged to...Aperture Science itself.  During an experiment involving portal technology, the ship up and vanished, taking a chunk of its drydock along with it.  Dr. Kleiner notes that Aperture Science was in competition with Black Mesa over the development of portal technology (which you can also see mentioned in an in-game slide show in Portal), but Aperture's research methods were (obviously) less sound.  Kleiner wonders about the potential of the technology contained on the ship, but Eli Vance steps in and emphatically states that it's too dangerous to attempt and has to be destroyed.  Based on the end of Episode 2, the general assumption is that Episode 3 (whenever the hell it's finally released) will involve Gordon and Alyx traveling north to rescue Mossman and find the Borealis.  So yeah, I'd say the connection is fairly prominent. :P

I had heard something like that, but didn't know the details, so interesting to see that there is a pretty good connection between Portal and Half-Life.

Although, it only seems to be in Half-Life, whereas Portal stands more on it's own.

PORTAL 2 VIDEO AT IGN!!!!

I love the personality sphere.

As you watch through the gameplay videos, you can tell that they went all out. There are a lot more intense things that you can do.

Oh my gosh, Valve is possibly one of the best game developers ever. (Sorry Descent)

But look at the gameplay videos, They are amazing.

The concept is just amazing and it tells a story at the same time, but still being hilarious as well. I loved the "Thermal Discouragement Beam"  ;D
