D2Junkie, what game are you referring to? I know in D2 they use the same weapon type and there doesn't appear to be any scalars on the code that fires the player flares.

Yes, you can (in all versions of Descent). Wall impacts can damage. More than once I've been at little to no shields remaining and out of frustration (with whatever level I was dealing with) I did a 'suicide' by ramming into the wall rather than get my weapon spew scattered in a room with bots (to make it easier to come back and pickup).

For me wall damage stops at about 4. I have never lost any more shields from ramming into walls after it hit 4.
Of course objects, robots, etc. are a different story.
