Rethinking a couple of my correlations... opinions please!
« on: December 14, 2012, 09:25:44 PM »
Okay, on my Descent Correlations album that I made awhile back where I attempt to pair together (via mash-up mixes of the two) the MIDI tracks with the Redbook tracks that sound MOST LIKE the MIDI tracks (whether they be direct obvious re-renditions of the MIDIs or not so obvious renditions of the MIDIs), here's how I currently have it:

Game05 = Not That Button!:

Game10 = Industrial Accident:
http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php?action=media;sa=item;in=830

I think they make more sense together the other way around. What do you think?

Game05 with Industrial Accident:

Game10 with Not That Button:

I like to think I have a Descent taste of music.

I think they make more sense the way you had them before...
A lot of the "original" songs on the D1 redbook seem to have been based on song "archetypes" from D1's midi.  Not That Button! sounds like it's based on the game05/game09 archetype.  And Industrial Accident sounds like it's based on the same wierd upbeat rock style as game10 (but so does Rusty...).

I have a better idea though.  Why don't you ask Allister Brimble himself?  http://www.planetdescent.net/index.php?action=profile;u=4860

I've revisited my correlations (YET AGAIN, as of August 4, 2013) and have revised them to what I think is the closest damned thing I'll ever get to a Redbook to MIDI association. There's some similarities to stuff I've had in the past along with this new list. Just check it out. Some drastic changes are afoot:

Note: As always, Game23 thru Game26 is D2 Game01 thru D2 Game04

* = New Association
+ =  New Song

*Game01: Death
Game02: Virtual Tension
Game03: Mystery Metal
*Game04: Overdrive
*Game05: Pain
*Game06: Primitive Rage
*Game07: Industrial Accident
*Game08: Haunted
*Game09: Rusty
*Game10: Not That Button!
Game11: Glut
Game12: Robotic Menace
Game13: Ratzez
Game14: A Big Problem
Game15: Are You Descent?
*Game16: Crawl
Game17: Crush
Game18: Hydraulic Pressure
Game19: Gunner Down
Game20: Base Return
+Game21: Lost in the Mines vs Robotic Menace (CFX vs Allister Brimble Mash-Up by Alieo)
Game22: Time for the Big Guns
*Game23: Techno Industry (Kia suggested this from the start.)
*Game24: Cold Reality (Kia suggested this from the start.)
Game25: Robot Jungle
*Game26: Collision Dome Excavation

And for formality's sake, I use the following for...
Title: Descent II (Alieo's Extended Remix)
Briefing: Outerlimits
Credits: Ether in the Air
Exit: Exiting the Mine!

...and some bonus tracks:
- Systems 1-6
- Tycho Brahe

Opinions on the new associations would be appreciated!

Some stark discoveries, IMO, are Death for Game01, Crawl for Game16, and Collision Dome Excavation for Game26! Also, when Game08 is slowed down enough, the bass goes along with Haunted pretty well. NOTHING is definite, but for me, this new list seems like it's closer to the theory than ever before.
I like to think I have a Descent taste of music.

Since these threads never seem to die anyway (probably my fault), I just wanted to post a couple things I found recently.  It fits in here, and it could combine with it for a little bit of interesting discussion (at least between me and Texace :P) which is why I decided not to make a new thread.

D1 game19 sounds a lot like "Blood on the Wall" by Skinny Puppy, especially during the beginning but there are similarities throughout both songs:

And second, I bought "The Downward Spiral" by Nine Inch Nails recently (it's from 1995, but I bought it recently :P) and found a track that a certain D2 redbook song seems to be practically based on... with a large name similarity too.
* Kaiaatzel doesn't think it's coincidence
Makes you wonder what Brian Luizietti actually meant by the title "Gunner Down" :P

Ho, wow! That Skinny Puppy track definitely resembles Game19. As far as that second track goes, yeah, you can totally hear Gunner Down's drums in there. Would make for a good boss battle song. I've heard that one before, but only the remix version, not, what I guess is the original. Check out the remix:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75pGmcQwi68

As far as figuring out these correlations go, I've always gotten to a point where they all pretty much match up, but something awkward is in place just because it's a leftover, such as Game15 with Haunted (Yea--no). So, what I've resorted to doing is to come up with a lineup I call the "Debut Order". They're in order of the game's release date followed by the track order of that game's release date. Here's how I got 'em grouped now...

[1-12: D1 MAC]
1. Primitive Rage (D1 Theme)
2. Outer Limits (D1 Briefing)
3. Robotic Menace
4. Virtual Tension
5. Time for the Big Guns
6. Mystery Metal
7. Hydraulic Pressure
8. Not that Button!
9. Industrial Accident
10. Overdrive
11. A Big Problem
12. Ether in the Air (D1 Credits)

[13-16 New songs from Descent PSX]
13. Haunted
14. Rusty
15. Ratzez
16. Glut

[17-27 New songs from Descent 2 Redbook Audio, First Release]
17. Base Return
18. Descent II (Extended Remix)
19. Gunner Down
20. Cold Reality
21. Crush
22. Death
23. Are You Descent?
24. Techno Industry
25. Robot Jungle
26. Final Mission
27. Crawl

[28 & 29 Descent 2 Vertigo New Songs]
28. Collision Dome Excavation
29. Pain

30. Lost in the Mines vs Robotic Menace - CFX vs Allister Brimble (had to make it 30, so I included my mash-up of these two, which used to serve as the Game21 correlation... plus 29 is mah unlucky number, so yeah.)

[Not long enough to be level songs]
31. "Systems"
32. "Tycho Brahe"
33. "Exiting the Mine" (from D1 MAC)

* Kaiaatzel found some more things that he doesn't think are coincidences!
After buying Too Dark Park... more old Skinny Puppy

Mars Military Dig

and Nature's Revenge

Europa C02 Mine:

and Spasmolytic:

Neptune Storage Depot:

and Morpheus Laughing:

I also found an interesting parallel between Cold Reality and D2 game02 when I was listening closely, cuz they're the only Descent songs that change their time signatures partway through -- both of them change from 4/4 to 6/4 for a "refrain" or main theme that plays just after the intro of the song and then again at the end.  In Cold Reality the refrain also adds a measure of 2/4 after every fourth measure of 6/4...
* Kaiaatzel goes on and gets even more technical

Was actually wrong about the last part, there's one more song in Descent (also from D2 redbook) that changes its time signature: Crush switches between 4/4, 5/4, and 15/4 many times throughout the track.

I've had lot's of time to listen to stuff as I'm trucking now, and I got around to listening to Descent again and revitalized my "correlations" again. This is my 2020 lineup now. Some stuff is the same, but a lot has changed.

Notations:
[1] = obvious remix
[2] = that's totally that song! but not too obvious
[3] = It goes with it
[4] = Fractal; it's a part of this song and another song
[5] = new realization from old list
[6] = Non-redbook song

D1—
GAME01: Not That Button! [2][5]
GAME02: Virtual Tension [1]
GAME03: Mystery Metal [1]
GAME04: Are You Descent? [2][5]
GAME05: Overdrive [2][5]
GAME06: Primitive Rage [4][5]
GAME07: Cold Reality [3][5]
GAME08: Rusty [2][5]
GAME09: Crawl [2]
GAME10: Industrial Accident [2]
GAME11: Glut [2]
GAME12: Robotic Menace [1]
GAME13: The Well (Mark 2) [2]
GAME14: A Big Problem [1]
GAME15: Ratzez [3]
GAME16: Transmode Containment 2112 (Mark 1) [2]
GAME17: Crush [2]
GAME18: Hydraulic Pressure [1]
GAME19: Gunner Down [2]
GAME20: Base Return [2]
GAME21: Robotic Menace [1]
GAME22: Time for the Big Guns [1]
DESCENT.MID: Primitive Rage [1][4]
BRIEFING.MID: Outerlimits [1]
ENDLEVEL.MID: The Escape [1]
ENDGAME.MID: Final Mission [2][4]
CREDITS.MID: Ether in the Air [1]

D2—
GAME01: Techno Industry [2][5]
GAME02: Pain [2]
GAME03: Robot Jungle [2]
GAME04: Haunted [3]
DESCENT2.MID: Descent II Title [1]
BRIEFING: Final Mission [2][4]
CREDITS: Revelation (OC ReMix by DJ Redlight) [1][6]

I still combine my D1 and D2 music in the same folder for the MIDIs, only I lead with D2 for tracks 1-4, then make D1 Levels 1-4 be 23-26 because they actually repeated on those levels in First Strike.
I like to think I have a Descent taste of music.

If you want a bit more fun with game11 take NIN's "Head Like a Hole" and play the bassline at just over double speed...
