Icons on my machine have new feature... WHAT???
« on: August 22, 2009, 05:57:10 AM »
Today I opened a zip file I downloaded a while back and copied the contents to a new folder. Then I noticed in the new folder the Icons were different. They were the same Icons but with an added symbol in the bottom left corner. It looks like a black square with a white circle and a triangle in the circle, or maybe hands like a clock. I don't think I have seen this before! Anyone know what this means?

I can honestly say I've not seen that before ... except when a misbehaving program has been recently installed.

There is also the possibility that your "iconcache" file has gotten corrupted and needs to be deleted.  Normally you don't have to do that because Windows constantly updates/changes that file on the fly.

Argh any chance you can put it on another image host? My network still won't display SMF attachments (I think my dad has something configured wrong: Our proxy server returns 502 Bad paramater when you try to view one directly)

Can you view it like this?:

No that doesn't work either. I even attempted going to the image file itself and I still get a 502 Bad Paramater error. I'll talk to my dad about this someday.

Hmmm... must be javascript... Is your Javascript up to date?

Anyway, try this, no javascript...

Now, I have further observed that I can't get a thumbnail preview of files that have this icon... Some folders are affected and some are not!

Wish you had a closer view of that icon "overlay" that's putting that there.

Ah!  Are you familier with the "Magnifier" ?  (Programs, Accessories, Accessibility)  I'd like to get a close up view of that icon overlay.  (see attached example)

And... I assume regular shortcuts still have to traditional arrow overlay on their icons?

Here's the results of using magnifier. I do have the shortcut icon showing normally. And also here is the 'choose icon' tool-box showing this icon. If I knew the name of this icon I could google it.

Thanks Atan, but I am not looking to just remove them... That would defeat their purpose of being there in the first place. I would like to know why they are there, and why I cannot view image files that have this symbol as a thumbnail.

I can open the image files... ok.
I can move, copy, delete them... ok.
I cannot veiw them in thumbnail view... not ok!

When I move a file to another folder that folder is fine, i can then view them as thumbnail.

I have not seen this problem, but I found the following link, which I quoted
from below. I hope it helps, for I have no other ideas otherwise.
http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/M..._21587254.html

/quoted from above link:
====
What are those little overlay icons?

Windows XP ships with a number of icon overlays.

* A small arrow. Everybody knows this one: It's the shortcut overlay.
* A hand, palm up. This is the "sharing" overlay. A folder with this
overlay is the root of a file share.
* A downward-pointing blue arrow. This is the "to be written to CD"
overlay.
* A pair of blue swirling arrows. This sometimes baffles people. This
means that the item is available offline. (You have to enable offline
folders to get this.)
* A black clock. This really baffles people. This means that the file
has been archived to tape and will take a very long time to access.

The black clock is particularly baffling because you sometimes see it even
if your system is not equipped with Hierarchical Storage Management. When
this happens, it's because some program (typically a setup program) didn't
check error codes properly.

I hope this helps someone in the future. Thanks for trying

William

Sounds like the file attributes are a bit whacked in that folder.  If copying them fixes the issue, try re-creating the folder and copying the files in.

I think it's Foil found there. Take the time and read to the end.
It doesn't say where your icon is from, but you'll know what you installed, run before this trouble.
Quote
Because a single overlay is applied to the taskbar button instead of to the individual window thumbnails, this is a per-group feature rather than per-window. Requests for overlay icons can be received from individual windows in a taskbar group, but they do not queue. The last overlay received is the overlay shown. If the last overlay received is removed, the overlay that it replaced is restored so long as it is still active. As an example, windows 1, 2, and 3 set, in order, overlays A, B, and C. Because overlay C was received last, it is shown on the taskbar button. Window 2 calls SetOverlayIcon with a NULL value to remove overlay B. Window 3 then does the same to remove overlay C. Because window 1's overlay A is still active, that overlay is then displayed on the taskbar button.

If Windows Explorer shuts down unexpectedly, overlays are not restored when Windows Explorer is restored. The application should wait to receive the TaskbarButtonCreated message that indicates that Windows Explorer has restarted and the taskbar button has been re-created, and then call SetOverlayIcon again to reapply the overlay.
