D2Junkie had a nice post here on the Linux subject ... and since this is a thread about Desktop backgrounds (and not Linux) ... I split the thread and moved the Linux conversation over to Technical.

Here's the one from my brand-spanking-new install of Ubuntu: Jaunty Jackalope. I like keeping things simple, yet unique.

It's a lot better than the industrial orange colors they give you by default
And just for kicks here's my ubuntu virtual machine's desktop:
It's still using 8.04. For the very little I use this VM it's not worth going through the download and update process

Lol. I downloaded a green GNOME theme and a cool wallpaper to get rid of the ugly diarrhea brown color of the normal theme.

I just tried out Puppy Linux (super small OS, loads entirely into a 64mb RAMDISK, super fast (because it's loaded into RAM). Pretty cool. I talk a bit more about it in Technical...
Anyway ... here's a screenshot.

Ah yes, Puppy. Its size is one its main selling points. My brother has taken a liking to it, mostly because of its small size and its versatility for graphic design. He had more of a liking to GrafPup, but it's not supported, and the CD images available for download are corrupt.
I still haven't changed my wallpaper. It may be the wallpaper I've had up longest this year since my reformat after trying Windows 7.

Here's a screenie from my Pentium 4 Desktop. Had Fedora KDE, but I ran into just a couple of usability issues that made it not worth my time, so I moved to CrunchBang. I'm using roughly 150MB of RAM out of 3GB to power an OS that looks rather spiffy - how cool is that?

See, that's what a clean Desktop should look like.

I'm with TechPro. Clean/uncluttered desktops are best.

I view a desktop as just that: a desktop. If you put junk all over your desktop, there's no room for work. In Windows, I hate having to click "view desktop" everytime I want to open something else. In Crunchbang, it's actually
impossible
to put icons on the desktop, since everything is instantly available at a simple right-click menu on the desktop. That's how much I disdain clutter.
INSERT: Here's another from my laptop.
