Hey everyone, Iron_Ian / ArtOfShred here with a project I've been working on for a while. I've done my best here to compile all of the official Descent series of games soundtracks in the highest quality possible! This project as of 7/26/2014 has finally reached what I'd consider its first "Finalized" release. You can find notes below to accompany each individual soundtrack. I've put a lot of work into compiling all this audio for the community. I hope you guys enjoy the most comprehensive music release to date for the Descent series of games!

All soundtracks listed here are in the highest quality I could obtain. Redbook audio is ripped to FLAC with EAC, and the Playstation soundtrack .XA files have been converted with PSound/Foobar2000. In addition I've included two recordings of the midi soundtrack for both Descent 1 and Descent 2 with a few bonus tracks as well. All audio has embedded album art and complete normalized tags. Log files are included in the CD Audio flac releases, and while there is no accuraterip database information present for some of the CDA releases (The MacPlay ones for example) I can confirm their accuracy as I have compared the files between my own rips and others. The only exception to this is the original Descent II soundtrack (I don't have a copy to verify with). I have no reason to believe it is not accurate however.

Thanks for viewing and I hope you enjoy!

Special thanks go out to:
- Tim Jones for releasing the loseless versions of the original Descent 3 cinematic audio!
- Pumo of Planet Descent for providing the OPL3 midi soundtracks & allowing Pumo Mines to be included in the project
- Mark Morgan and Dan Wentz for responding to my email inquires
- cybero75 for fixing issues with the Descent II SC-55 Midi release
- ThugsRook of the DXX-Rebirth forum for loseless rips of the Descent II & Descent II MacPlay Soundtrack
- Dan Wentz for creating some amazing remixes of Vampyro and allowing them to be a part of the collection
- And the Planet Descent community for their feedback, contribution and support!

The Descent Midi Soundtrack recorded in two forms:

DOSBox OPL3 Emulation: Pumo of PlanetDescent painstakingly recorded these track by track through DOSBox OPL3 emulation and the Descent Setup program. Note that the extra tracks here from the shareware version are actually no different than the retail release version songs when played normally. However they lack the FM audio support of the retail audio so therefore sound different when played in OPL3 FM.
Roland SC-55: Recorded on a Roland SC-55 by Brandon "MusicallyInspired" Blume, you can find these and more here on his SC-55 recording page on Duke4.net. The Descent soundtrack was composed with a Roland SC-55 so this is considered to be "the way it was meant to be heard," and it sounds great. My only work here was renaming the files with the title of their corresponding ingame level.

The Descent Soundtrack was composed by the Descent II Redbook audio artists, however individual track artist information is unknown. I'm not a fan of bloating my tags with insanely long artist tiles, however if you feel like replacing my "Interplay" artist substitute you can edit the tags easily in MP3Tag and fill the info in:
Artist Line: Brian Luzietti, Jim Torres, Ken Allen, Larry Peacock, Leslie Spitzer, Tim Wiles
Album Artist Line: Brian Luzietti/Jim Torres/Ken Allen/Larry Peacock/Leslie Spitzer/Tim Wiles

Track 8 is a remix of the Title Theme by the original composer Dan Wentz, recorded on a Roland PMA-5. You can find more of his work here. Track 9 is a bonus track included from a fan mission made for the game aeons ago called Vampyro. Dan Wentz composed the music for this map, so I've recorded it with an SC-55 Soundfont. Note that it isn't perfect compared to actual hardware but it is pretty damn solid. The soundfont can be found here: SC-55 Soundfont ( NEW VERSION V1.9, Link in the description)

There is a lot of debate over what the proper track title names for these songs are, with numerous sources showing different titles. This is what I feel are the correct track names.

15 Outerlimits - Allister Brimble (02:33)
16 Ether in the Air (PSX Mix) - Allister Brimble (04:49)
17 Descent Playstation Ending - Mark Morgan (01:44)

Ripped from the PSX .XA audio files and cinematic audio. These files were originally 37800 hz files, converted to 44100 hz for compatibility (no pitch change). I ripped them directly from the XA files on the disc and used both PSound and the plugin for Foobar to compare conversions and found no differences. http://www.allgame.com/game.php?id=2084&tab=credits has Mark Morgan credited for doing the cinematic audio for this release and I believe that is correct. Note that the files were reordered based on their ingame appearance. Thanks to Alieo aka Texace146, I used the track order present on his upload of the PSX soundtrack here.

Descent II (Complete Modified Version) (1996)
Album Artist: Interplay
14 Tracks (FLAC)/(MP3, 320 kbps, 44100 hz)

*01 Base Return - Peter Rotter (03:34) (Additional Redbook audio from Interplay Website, 128 kbps)
02 Title - Brian Luzietti (00:43)
03 Crawl - Brian Luzietti (02:39)
04 Glut - Mark Walk/Ogre of Skinny Puppy (01:57)
05 Gunner Down - Brian Luzietti (02:32)
06 Cold Reality - Brad Cross/Larry Peacock/Leslie Spitzer (03:05)
07 Ratzez - Mark Walk/Ogre of Skinny Puppy (02:30)
08 Crush - Brian Luzietti (03:25)
09 The Well (Mark 2) - Mark Morgan (02:52)
10 Haunted (Instrumental Remix) - Type O Negative (02:48)
11 Are You Descent? - Ron Valdez (02:45)
12 Techno Industry - Johann Langlie (02:20)
13 Robot Jungle - Johann Langlie (02:54)
*14 Final Mission - Peter Rotter (02:30) (Additional Redbook audio from Interplay Website, 128 kbps)
* Note: MP3 Version only

This is the original Descent II soundtrack album with a few minor adjustments for completion. The Intro and Endgame cinematic audio was released on the Interplay website aeons ago as 128 kbps mp3's. I've tagged these onto the beginning and end of the original album. Track 09 was originally known as Untitled. The Redbook audio release on the Interplay website for this track was titled "Mark2." I've taken the level that it first appears on ingame "The Well" and tagged it as such. It's generally agreed upon that Mark Morgan did not title any of his tracks present in the D2 Soundtrack. I contacted him about the tracks and he says he doesn't remember if he ever titled them.

Descent II: Vertigo Series (1996)
Album Artist: Interplay
7 Tracks (FLAC)/(MP3, 320 kbps, 44100 hz)

01 Crush (Extended Remix) - Brian Luzietti (04:39)
02 Glut (Extended Remix) - Mark Walk/Ogre of Skinny Puppy (02:12)
03 Haunted (Instrumental Re-Remix) - Type O Negative (04:57)
04 Transmode Containment 2112 (Mark 1) - Mark Morgan (03:41)
05 The Well (Extended Remix) (Mark 2) - Mark Morgan (03:54)
06 Pain - Larry Peacock (04:22)
07 Rusty - Mark Walk/Ogre of Skinny Puppy (03:19)

The Vertigo Series album has had missing info filled in to the best of my ability. The last 4 tracks were originally unnamed and some were also missing artist info. From the redbook audio released on the Interplay website we can determine that Track 7 was called Rusty (also present in a longer mix on the Descent 1 PSX release), Track 6 was by Larry Peacock and known as Pain. Track 4 and 5 were named after the levels they first appear in, Track 4 pertaining to Transmode Containment 2112 (known as Mark 1 on the Interplay Website), and Track 5 is an extended remix to the Mark Morgan song present on the original D2 Soundtrack, therefore I named it after the level it was first played in for the base game. There is some disagreement to these unofficial titles for the songs present, I named them after the first level  they appeared in while playing with the Vertigo CD in D2X Rebirth.

Descent II: The Infinite Abyss (1996)
Album Artist: Interplay
8 Tracks (FLAC)/(MP3, 320 kbps, 44100 hz)

01 Title - Brian Luzietti (00:46)
02 Cold Reality (Extended Remix) - Brad Cross/Larry Peacock/Leslie Spitzer (05:01)
03 Crawl (Extended Remix) - Brian Luzietti (03:42)
04 Gunner Down (Extended Remix) - Brian Luzietti (03:35)
05 Ratzez (Short Remix) - Mark Walk/Ogre of Skinny Puppy (02:20)
06 Techno Industry (Extended Remix) - Johann Langlie (04:27)
07 Are You Descent? (Extended Remix) - Ron Valdez (03:41)
08 Robot Jungle (Extended Remix) - Johann Langlie (04:31)

This soundtrack is pretty much unmodified, I renamed track 05 Ratzez from "(Extended Remix)" to "(Short Remix)" because it is actually a shorter variation of song present on the original soundtrack.

Ripped from the PSX .XA audio files. These files were originally 37800 hz files, converted to 44100 hz for compatibility (no pitch change). I ripped them directly from the XA files on the disc and used both PSound and the plugin for Foobar to compare conversions and found no differences. Most of the raw files were oddly 3:10 in length and had the last note looping periodically between silence for the unused remainder of the track. I've cut them to the length of the original D2/Infinite Abyss/Vertigo tracks where appropriate and made a list of the unique tracks below:
* Crawl = 8 Seconds longer than the Descent II Soundtrack version
* Robot Jungle = Much longer fadeout than Descent II Soundtrack version
* Crush = Cuts off 10 seconds earlier than the Descent II Soundtrack version
* Rusty = Shorter than Descent II Soundtrack version or Descent Playstation version

This is a compilation of all the Descent III audio. A huge thanks to composer Tim Jones for releasing the lossless source audio files for us!!! Check out Tim's work at:
http://www.jonestimjones.com/

Tracks 7-29 are extracted and compiled from the split tracks from the ingame .osf files (these are just Interplay ACM renamed). They are 16 bit 22.5 khz files with an unknown amount of compression. As such I've converted them to FLAC just to provide the highest potential quality. I resampled the files up to 44.1 khz, and while I'm aware that doesn't actually effect the quality at all and doubles the file size - I'd rather provide a normalized release than have a soundtrack with bitrates and frequencies going all over the place.

The gamerip music from Descent 3 is compiled to match the order present in Jerry Berlongieri's old mp3.com releases of the tracks - these releases follow the ingame order. There are a few tracks that were never released however, and I did my best to organize the tracks in the most logical order, a few notes follow:
* Level 3 - I felt this song had some rather harsh transitions and quiet parts so the file I included in the soundtrack is the ONLY song I've added additional audio to - I added in Thunder and Rain sound effects (from the game audio and from freeware sources) to enhance the song. If you don't like this version an alternate is available here:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/r2of4k4j9ypai5o/14_(Level_3)_Research_(Tiris)_ALTERNATE.flac
http://www.mediafire.com/listen/becjchtdtz43395/14_(Level_3)_Research_(Tiris)_ALTERNATE.mp3
* Level 5 - This was the shortest duration song on the soundtrack so I looped a section of it, if for some reason you just want the point to point:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/q6ge1lssg77g9d0/16_(Level_5)_They_Think_We're_Terrorists_(Mars)_ALTERNATE.flac
http://www.mediafire.com/listen/vps9th4exv2b9qt/16_(Level_5)_They_Think_We're_Terrorists_(Mars)_ALTERNATE.mp3
* Level 6 - This track wasn't represented among Jerry's mp3.com releases. This map was mostly linear but in the beginning you were given a choice to collect the Builder's or Collector's Symbol first. I organized the audio in a manner that I felt had the best transitions. Also there are a few additional audio segments in the game files that do not play in the level I have heard mixed into some other versions of this track before, I thought it best to just leave them out.
* Level 7 - One of my favorite tracks on the album, this was a song that wasn't included in Jerry's mp3.com releases. Level 7 has 6 different loops after the intro from a combination of the individual files that play depending on where you are in the map. These loops also transition into each other. Some of these loops have one unique 13 or 26 second section. I decided that the best way to represent this track was just to include all 6 loops, leaving it with a whopping 12:31 minute duration. Note that while this map is relatively non-linear, the order I choose for the loops pertained to the order of objectives present in the guidebot menu.
* Level 13 - Another track that wasn't included in Jerry's releases. This one was pretty simple to lay out.

If you'd prefer the 128kbps 44khz releases Jerry posted and the other various bitrate mixes I had previously released, I have the earlier version still available:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/8x1q1ns861b7o4v/ALTERNATE_Descent_3_Soundtrack_(FLAC).rar
http://www.mediafire.com/download/c7sgj9sr465p3zs/ALTERNATE_Descent_3_Soundtrack_(MP3).rar

Track 29-33 are listed as bonus tracks. Track 29 is from the 5-level Demo release of Descent III that came bundled with the Voodoo 3 V3000 video card which I thankfully had an ISO of to extract the files. Tracks 30-33 are ripped from the Interplay .mve movies via Game Audio Player. I'm not sure what kind of quality .mve files are but the audio is extracted to FLAC, and they sound really good too. Even though we have the source audio from Tim Jones for the cinematics, I figure I'd tag these on here as a bonus too.

Descent 3: Mercenary (1999)
Album Artist: Jerry "AutoPilot" Berlongieri
9 Tracks (FLAC)/(MP3, 320 kbps, 44100 hz)

01 Descent 3: Mercenary Intro - Julian Soule (00:57)
02 (Level 1) Resignation - Jerry "AutoPilot" Berlongieri (08:32)
03 (Level 2) Failsafe - Jerry "AutoPilot" Berlongieri (06:49)
04 (Level 3) Thirteen Omega - Jerry "AutoPilot" Berlongieri (09:38)
05 (Level 4) Solar Ignite - Jerry "AutoPilot" Berlongieri (06:50)
06 (Level 5) Pink Slip - Jerry "AutoPilot" Berlongieri (08:44)
07 (Level 6) Conveyor - Jerry "AutoPilot" Berlongieri (08:09)
08 (Level 7) Successor - Jerry "AutoPilot" Berlongieri (10:09)
09 Descent 3: Mercenary Ending - Tim Jones (00:13)

Track 1 and 9 are ripped from the Interplay .mve movies via Game Audio Player. I'm not sure what kind of quality .mve files are but the audio is extracted to FLAC.

The rest of the audio is extracted and compiled from the split tracks from the ingame .osf files (these are just Interplay ACM renamed).

The gamerip music from Mercenary is compiled to exactly match the order present in Jerry Berlongieri's old mp3.com releases of the tracks - these releases follow the ingame order. If you'd prefer the 128kbps 44khz releases Jerry posted, I have the previous version of the Descent 3: Mercenary release still available:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/uhwpebpeip7a93u/ALTERNATE_Descent_3_-_Mercenary_(FLAC).rar
http://www.mediafire.com/download/cbob8tpk3ym3zd3/ALTERNATE_Descent_3_-_Mercenary_(MP3).rar

A note on the credits, http://www.allgame.com/game.php?id=22504&tab=credits lists Julian Soule as the composer for the Intro cinematic, and the ending cinematic is a sound clip from the Descent 3 intro so is therefore by Tim Jones.

Descent 2: Vampyro Remastered (2013)
Album Artist: Dan Wentz
3 Tracks (MP3, 320 kbps, 44100 hz)

01 Vampyro Briefing (Remastered) - Dan Wentz (02:00)
02 Vampyro Title (Remastered) - Dan Wentz (02:39)
03 Vampyro Credits (Remastered) - Dan Wentz (01:24)

Vampyro was a custom mission created for Descent II by Midi Soundtrack composer Dan Wentz and his friend Rob Dunlop. You can read a bit more here if you're interested: http://www.descent2.com/levels/d2/vampyro/index.html

I contacted Dan last year when I started this compilation project about rerecording Vampyro on his hardware for the mix, and he ended up doing much more than that. After a few weeks of work this was the very exciting result!

Dan was also the composer responsible for the Descent: Freespace 1 & 2 soundtracks, and he has numerous excellent remixes of these tracks among his other work available on his SoundCloud:

Descent Remastered (2014)
Album Artist: SunSpire Records
2 Tracks (FLAC)/(MP3, 320 kbps, 44100 hz)

Album Artist:
01 (Level 1) Lunar Outpost (SunSpire Remix) - SunSpire Records (03:54)
02 (Level 2) Lunar Scilab (SunSpire Remix) - SunSpire Records (03:52)

Today I'm adding the second remix album to the project, by Marco of SunSpire Records!

You can find more of his work here at: SunSpire Records

Newly revamped from their 2008 versions, the 2014 version of these two tracks sound great, very true to the originals but with a ton of extra punch and clarity. Listen to the SC-55 midi recordings then this album - the diesel bass in Lunar Scilab made me nerd out hard. By far my favorite covers of these tracks from the game!

Marco wanted me to pass along this message: "My goal to remake more Descent tracks still stands, although it has been many years since I've last worked in that area so I won't make any promises. I have so many different projects going on these days, it's hard to keep track of them."

Original audio composed by Pumo of PlanetDescent for "Pumo Mines: Kartsal Motivation," a D2/D2X-XL Mission/Mod project. Pumo has allowed me to include his music into the project. I wanted to incorporate remixes and audio made for Descent projects into the collection as well, as the Descent community is full of talent.

Presumed to be lost in the nethervoid forever:
* Descent Playstation - Intro and ending cinematic music before game audio was mixed in (Done by Mark Morgan, he no longer has the files for them).
* Descent II - Planetary Warp cutscene music & last world warp music before game audio was mixed in.
* Descent II - Intro & Ending cinematics in higher quality than 320 kbps mp3.
* Descent 3 - Intro full version. Tim Jones may be able to search for a CD backup of the Intro track if he has the time.
* Descent 3 Mercenary - Descent III Mercenary Intro before the game sound was mixed in.

The artists for the midi files from Descent 1 are all the same people who did the Descent 2 redbook soundtrack, but AFAIK nobody knows who did what.  I've tried to get in contact with Larry Peacock about it but he hasn't responded to my messages.

The PSX and MAC tracks from Descent 1 were indeed remixed/written by Allister Brimble.  Apart from the Skinny Puppy/Type O Negative tracks which you already know.  Ironically lately he's been remixing game songs again (this time from oggs into some midi-like format, so in reverse!) for another one of my top game franchises.

The artist who wrote the Descent 2 midi songs was Dan Wentz, the same guy who did the soundtracks for Freespace 1 & 2 and Red Faction 1 & 2 (which has one of the only soundtracks I like... gasp... better than Descent's!).  Which means there are a couple songs you could be missing... the music from the Vampyro singleplayer mission for D2 is arguably official since he wrote it -- in the parallax software office to boot, if I read the mission's txt file right! (and he also built at least part of the map, he was an official level designer on D2), and this mix of the D2 menu theme: http://soundcloud.com/daniel-wentz/descent-title-redux.

Also, interestingly enough, both Allister Brimble and Dan Wentz are members here despite PlanetDescent's relatively recent nature.  Descent has not gone completely forgotten by those who made it 8).

And speaking of songs you could be missing, the OPL3 mix of the Descent 1 game18 (Miranda Mine) track is significantly different from the wavetable mix (it's much slower) so it might be worth adding as a separate track... I actually like that version better.  And the OPL3 mixes of game12 and game21 were also significantly different, not from the wavetable tracks but from each other, so they might be worth adding too.  The title track from D1 had a few extra lines in the OPL3 version that weren't in the wavetable mix, as well.

Sweet, updating the artist for the D2 midi to Dan Wentz. Also holy shit that remix of the D2 title sounds pretty awesome. It's going on there for sure, I'll just make the norm for out of game audio compositions to be tagged onto the end of the soundtracks as Bonus tracks. Looks like he also uploaded the briefing song and, hmm... almost sounds a little better than the version I have. But I think the only change is a bit of added reverb on it. I might toss that on there too then for completion sake.

As far as the OPL3 mixes go, they are all uploaded here I think, but do we have any high quality FLAC versions of them floating around? As far as I know the only way to record them would be with an old OPL3 Soundcard. Emulation is probably close but not quite right if its anything like the SC-55. I might as well just release an alternate version of the Midi soundtrack in OPL3 for both games. I think the sound is probably different enough to warrant it. And if we can ever get our hands on a full SC-88 recording, I'd release that separately just for kicks too. You could argue for making variations for different soundfonts that sound good on the internet but man that could just get ridiculous. If there's enough interest in it, and those responsible for remixes don't mind, I could compile some remix tracks into an additional bonus album too.

EDIT: Got the music from Vampyro. Don't have any way of converting it from HML to Midi, but Foobar can play it. Doesn't sound too good on crappy Microsoft Midi though lol. I imagine if I got in touch with Dan he might be able to record it in a way better format for us.

EDIT 2: Sent a message to Dan asking about perhaps obtaining those extra tracks recorded losslessly.

Man...so many links to click on, and so little time to do it in.  :P

But my personal collection of Descent music certainly could benefit from this, as I could have on up to, like, five different versions of the same song stashed away, and sometimes its been hard keeping track of what was what and what is the actual version I want to listen to at any given time. This all should help sort that out for me, help compress them down from five different versions of the same thing to a more sensible one (or maybe two) version(s) of the same thing. That and there are a few tracks here that I'm not familiar with, or am simply curious as to how you have mixed them (namely the D3 tracks), so yeah, I have some serious link clicking to do. :D

Yeah it's a whole big mess to manage too. D3 is kind of a wreck, but I'm pretty sure its basically complete, I've got all the levels in some form or another (Autopilot mix or extracted audio mixed by other people) + menu music extracted by myself + Tim's loseless audio. But I feel dirty having a release with stuff varying between 320 kbps/flac and like 128-160 kbps. Pretty sure there's a track in there in only 96 kbps too. I wish I could get my hands on Autopilot's CD versions of these tracks. Anyone know how to get in touch with him?

I'm doing a Google search now for Jerry Berlongieri now. Last time I checked, he did have an official site (or something like that) that might have some contact information.

Please stand by.

....

Good news, I've found his Twitter page: Link, as well as his probable Facebook page (Link) and a LinkedIn account with his name (Link, but you have to be a member of LinkedIn to see the account) as evidenced by the fact that they all share the same profile photo. But the Twitter page is definitely him (Descent is listed as one of the things he worked on). As for the files, there's a chance he might still have them. I remember he appeared on the forums sort of randomly once years back and commented that he thought he still had the tracks around somewhere and was going to look for them, but he never came back to say if he had succeeded or not.

I also found loads of sites that lists either credits for his previous works, or even samples of music he has done (including D3 on one site), but I didn't see any contact info on any of these. That Twitter page is probably your best bet, ALTHOUGH, it looks like he doesn't use it too often (last entry was December 2012), so I don't know how active it might be anymore.

Still, this was all on the first page of my Google search, so he doesn't seem to be exactly hard to find. Ah Google, how much I love thee... :D

Continuing a bit further in my search, I've also found a Google+ page that is likely his as well (Link), or at least the profile pictures, though not EXACTLY the same as the ones in the other accounts, seem to be of the same person.

And now I've found a Soundcloud account that is EASILY him (Link).

Annnnnd, yeah, that's about all I can find at the moment, so hopefully ONE of those helps you out.

Anyway, I have clicked and downloaded all of those links now, and plan to use all of this as a base to seriously reorganize my Descent music files/foobar albums. :)

Well shit on me, that page even has a few tracks up on it, maybe in better quality than what I have. I'll see if I can't get in touch via SoundCloud, or I actually do have a LinkedIn account (no idea why since I'm not in any sort of professional industry that it would benefit me) so I'll check on that too. Thanks for your help! Lemme know if you find anything unique in your collection when you're sorting through things. Glad this helps you out with sorting everything!

EDIT: Lol... apparently you have to pay $39.99 to upgrade your LinkedIn account to send mail. Looks like SoundCloud is gonna be our huckleberry.

EDIT 2: And sent a Soundcloud message to Jerry Berlongieri. Now we cross our fingers and wait! And I also just sent an email out to Peter Rotter (composer for the cinematic audio from Descent II).

EDIT 3: Post work update, got a response from Dan Wentz about his tracks! If he has the time he will whip us up some HQ recordings of Vampyro and the other D2 songs. Descent composers win for being cool as shit and responding to fan mail about their work!

I'll be sure to do so, especially the D3 tracks, seeing that I have more than one variant in my possession. There might be one that I have that has something you don't already (although I'd doubt it, you've done a pretty good job covering all the bases :D).

Hoooo found D1 OPL3 in FLAC! http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL74B8174BAF813E70

Glorious.

Something I just realized, a few of the shareware midi songs are different (or at least sound different in OPL3). Guess I need to get those added in here as well too. Though the shareware title theme about halfway through just sounds like a symphony of ass.

Ah, the D1 songs in their original audio format...man that brings back memories. I was thinking about suggesting using those instead of the audio format you have already, but it looks like you're already on that. :P

@Iron_Ian:
Indeed the songs of the Shareware sounds different on OPL3, but not all.

Briefing, Credits, Level 4 and Level 5 songs sounds the same on both Shareware and Registered versions, but Title, Level 1, Level 2 & Level 3 are different from their Registered counterparts.

That happens because on Registered version, the developers used specially designed OPL3 files for many of the songs (that also uses specially designed FM banks), while on the Shareware they are the same MIDI files you hear on every other sound card, just played with the standard/generic FM bank. :)

But both versions sounds great, and I'm specially fond of the Shareware versions, as those brings back some great memories.

If you're interested, I do have all D1 Shareware/D1 Registered/D2 OPL3 music files in MP3 48KHz 320kbps format, that I recorded using the DosBox OPL3 emulation, and they sound pretty nice.  ;)
Those are in fact the official OPL3 add-on files that you can also find on the DXX-Rebirth website, but they are re-encoded to OGG on there.
