Interesting, but personally, I never cared much for either top down or side scrollers. I love the feeling in Descent of being in the cockpit.

nice find! I am not too picky. Otherwise, I'd miss out on some great games. I do prefer first person the most, third is okay, but I play a lot of Zelda, so I'm sort of used to it.

@WillyP: It's not really a scroller, though you are moving around on a 2D plane. I'll see if I can put up a video of it in action sometime.

FYI, for anyone interested: This
is
playable, if you have the Java platform installed.
Just put a .bat file (or .sh for Linux) in the same folder as the extracted files, with nothing but the words "java game".

I was thinking about this on my way back from classes just now, and thought that one could be onto something with a 2D, top-down, style of Descent game that's sweet and simple. If one refined it greatly, maybe made it more like traditional Descent levels and the such with objectives and the such, it could make for a nice mobile game.
I know that's not exactly "high-brow" as it were, but I bring it up because Interplay seems to be real big on making mobile games in-between the larger games (which actually isn't a bad idea, business-wise), and it would help generate interest in Descent again from the public at large. Get enough interest and, theoretically, one could see more Descent, perhaps in other shapes and forms.
Just thinking aloud here.

Okay, here's a video of my pathetic attempt at the game just now:

No that's not a scroller, but there was an illustration of a side scroller in the thread linked, as well as what looked like a top down, which prompted my comment. To me, this just takes out everything I like about Descent.
