A hardware Soundfont synth is better of course, but there's that tiny bit, there has to be a Creative soundcard.

I always wondered how Lyris did his mixes, because the songs were basically midi files, but he did something to give them a non-midi-ish quality, almost like orchestral midi instruments, and it would be kewl to make mixes of other midi files with that sort of sound.

Chorus, humanising. Humanising is slight randomising of note velocity/timing...

The other trick is voice multiplication - it's used on some Heretic mixes too, basically it's multiplying the same part with more than one instrument (e. g. three instances of strings, panned centre, left, and right).

Eh, I've tried all of those but it never gives anything close to the right kind of sound.
