Oh, yay.

Reading the article, I think I agree with those against it.

Yeah, they clearly didn't learn, did they?

Or are they just trying to annoy the people into submission.
Because if they are then they're still idiots.

I guess if your idea of 'annoy' involves shutting down websites, big fines jail time, all at the whim of some political appointee... sure.

This isn't about piracy, as there are already laws against that. It's about censorship... Those with the power want more power, now they want power to shut down a site, no questions asked. Does anyone seriously believe that power won't be abused?

That wasn't what I was talking about.  I mean it looks to me like they're trying to keep presenting the bills until the people who don't want them to pass get tired of it and let them pass one.  That sounds ridiculously idiotic not to mention dishonorable to me.
I mean I don't think this one has a chance either.  But once they've inundated the entire... whatever you Americans have that would get inundated with bills, maybe they're hoping one would slip through.

Come to think of it it's undemocratic too, in a democracy the people should have the power to nix legislation that they really agree would be a bad idea, it's how we stop our leaders from simply declaring the country to be a dictatorship.  You do that through your representatives sure, but the point of democracy is you still have a voice.

Well you are absolutely right, it is a tactic, they reword and re-submit, and also include bits and pieces of it within other legislation. In the end it's the people who get screwed by bigger and bigger govt. as our pockets get picked and our rights get trampled and freedom fades away...

I think calling this an internet piracy bill is a bit much... Does it need rewording, probably, but is it necessarily bad what they're (supposedly) trying to do? Not at all. Governments have a right to not have all their sensitive secrets aired out for all the world.

Part of it probably is meant to address potential piracy issues, but I think WillyP nailed it on the head when saying it mostly dealt with censorship. Basically, the powers-that-be, whether government or cooperation, want the right to basically control what information gets out there in the world, a right that can be quickly abused MUCH too easily. It's part of the reason why the country has the right to freedom of speech in the first place, to try and combat that.

This bill in it's current state, however, would give people the ability to completely override that for their own benefit. So if it passed, it WOULD be abused as such.

I'm not against the idea of the government addressing the issue of internet piracy, but thus far they've been going about it entirely the wrong way.

Ah well, I'm glad I don't live in a country where corporations are more important than people.  Cause you know, I'm a person.  I'm not a corporation.

That wasn't really what I was implying, but I see your point, and I guess I can't deny that there's some truth to it.  :-\

I remember hearing on the news that CISPA passed in the House of Representatives.
